I think every system I've had has been either an upgrade installation over the old OS X or a restore from Time Machine. I've got other machines that aren't used for any development/testing and have been on the same base installation (and upgraded over the years) since like Lion, I think. I don't think there's any sort of timeframe, but if I do anything that might leave some kludge behind (developer preview OS, etc.) I'll do a clean install when I'm done testing.

Is there an event log or error file for photos? That I could look at to see whats going on? Nope, Photo Stream is instead of iCloud photo sharing so one or the other.
